At GMT, we help businesses join Facebook, Instagram and Twitter every day for the sole purpose of generating traffic. In addition to all of that, we also set up Google Ads and manage hundreds of AdWords accounts. However, due to the increasing participation in social media, success with conventional online advertising gets more and more difficult by the day.
For the small-medium business owner, this issue is particularly problematic. The smaller companies are up against competitors with larger marketing budgets and dedicated marketing teams. They’re watching every dollar spent on AdWords, or stressing about that fragile Facebook post-to-ad ratio.
Simply put, smaller businesses are not short of problems when it comes to successful online marketing. So, how do we get a leg up? Sometimes, the answer is by following the road less travelled, or, doing things a bit less conventional.
Below are four alternative ways to increase site traffic.
Google search queries are still the best way to find a business online. And in 2017 with the ever increasing popularity of Google Voice Search, online marketing endeavours are set to get more exciting.
A Google study carried out by Northstar Research showed that 55% of teens and 41% of adults use voice search more than once a day. And in 2016 at a keynote conference, Google revealed that 20% of all queries made on mobile devices were voice searches.
This SEO trend will only increase in popularity as voice searches get more and more intelligent. So, now is the time for every business to revisit or alternatively overhaul their online and mobile marketing strategies.

Makerly studied over 800,00 Instagram accounts and showed that as an influencer’s following expands, the rate of engagement with his or her followers starts to decrease. The study shows influencers with less than 100 followers have an average of 8% likes and 0.5% comments, while users with a following of 10 million and over garnered just 1.6% likes and 0.04% comments.
What this study shows is the power of the micro influencer. A micro influencer is an account with a 10 000- 100 000 follower count. By allying with them, you’re still exposed to a larger audience with followers more in tune with your influencer — not to mention they’re a far cheaper alternative to celebrity influencers.
In our humble opinion, StumbleUpon is an underrated traffic generator. The site is among the top seven social media traffic generators and in our experience it’s just as effective at generating traffic as conventional social media advertising.
So, how does one leverage StumbleUpon for traffic generation? First off, your content needs to be beautiful and/or relevant. StumbleUpon is not the platform to advertise sales pages and flog products because that kind of content will not go down well. Rather, your content should be in the form of any popular media format: images, tutorials, infographics and videos.
Lastly, add a StumbleUpon badge to your site to increase your chances of being “stumbled upon”, and be sure to complete your profile on StumbleUpon as this will bring people with similar interests direct to you.
Remarketing is a nifty strategy for users of Facebook and Twitter. It’s not enough to just set up an ad and leave it, hoping for the best. Instead, Facebook and Twitter Remarketing is a way of increasing the probability of a higher conversion rate by targeting people who’ve already visited your site and therefore have shown an interest in what you have to offer.
You’ll need to install a Facebook or Twitter tracking pixel on your site that’ll garner information about your site visitors. This way, you can continue to put your business in front of visitors and return traffic to your site repeatedly.
However, be sure to not target customers who’ve already got a subscription or used your business before, that can be dangerous. The reason behind that is you wouldn’t be alienating a visitor, you’d be alienating a customer. Make use of Facebook Custom Audience to ensure you exclude existing customers from your target audience (unless you plan to upsell something new).
And there you have it, four alternative ways to increase site traffic. You don’t need to be resigned to the highway, rather make your own path while the rest of your competitors drive straight.
